In Matthew 16:24, Jesus tells us that if we want to come after Him (to be a Christian) then we must deny ourselves, take up our cross (death) daily and follow Him.  He does not mention anything about raising your hand and praying a prayer.  This has become one of the greatest heresies in the Church today- salvation is not about inviting Jesus to be a part of you, salvation is about dying to you, and being reborn in Him.  He is Lord, we are not.  Our salvation is found in our one time death, burial, and resurrection in Christ and our sanctification includes our daily death to our own sinful desires.   The Apostle Paul says it this way in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ, I no longer live but Christ lives in me.”  We must live to die, and die to truly live.
